Periodontal Disease Q & A
by Maryam Haeri-Maybodi, DDS

What is periodontal disease?

Periodontal disease — gum disease — is an infection of the gums that can destroy the teeth and jaw bone. Most periodontal disease causes no pain, so patients don’t realize they have a problem until they have serious damage. This is why regular appointments with Dr. Haeri Maybodi are crucial to maintaining a strong, healthy mouth.

How many people suffer from periodontal disease?

Periodontal disease is quite widespread. In fact, as many as 75% of all adults will have some form of it in their lifetimes. Gum disease is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults over the age of 35.

What causes periodontal disease?

Periodontal disease comes from a bacterial infection in the gums and bone around the teeth. Without treatment, the gums start to separate from the teeth, causing periodontal pockets that get deeper and deeper. Eventually these pockets reach the supporting bone and, if left unchecked, cause the tooth to fall out.

What puts a patient at risk for periodontal disease?

Risk factors for increasing periodontal disease include:

  • Genetics
  • Smoking
  • Hormones
  • Stress
  • Nutrition
  • Diabetes
  • Medications
  • Grinding and clenching the teeth
  • Poor oral hygiene

How is periodontal disease treated?

In early stages, Dr. Haeri Maybodi will recommend deep cleaning and medication to treat periodontal disease. For more serious conditions Dr. Haeri Maybodi recommends laser therapy. Laser therapy allows her to remove inflamed gum tissue and expose the root of the tooth. By scaling the plaque off of the root below the gum line, she stops the spread of bacteria. The gum tissue re-grows as the area heals after treatment.

What natural treatments are available for periodontal disease?

While periodontal disease requires the oversight of a doctor, there are treatments patients can try at home. A healthy diet and adequate water intake help reduce the risk of these problems. Reducing sugar intake helps reduce bacterial growth.

Brushing after eating is important for patients with an active infection. Oil pulling with pure organic coconut oil can also help. This involves swishing a tablespoon of coconut oil in the mouth for around 20 minutes, then spitting it into the trash. This action helps pull toxins from the body and detoxing the oral cavity, helping the body fight gum disease naturally. Contact Dr. Haeri Maybodi for more ideas about holistic treatments for periodontal disease.
